About my current job
I teach on our undergraduate and postgraduate Psychology programs, supervise PhD students, carry out research into the development of executive function, and organise the department's public engagement activities.
Something important I learned during my time at EP
I learned how important peer support is – whether that be from other students at undergraduate, or from other researchers in the lab while doing my PhD.
How did my education influence my career path?
I had never even realised a PhD or a career in academia was possible before I started my degree. It was only by having first-hand experience of research through practicals and participating in experiments, speaking to tutors and lecturers who were active researchers, and having the opportunity to do a summer research placement, that I realised it was something I could do for a living.
Fond memories of my time at EP
I have so many fond memories, but the ones that stand out are celebrating when people from the lab group successfully passed their DPhil vivas. Everyone stopped what they were doing to join in and there was always cake, champagne and lots of laughter.
Did you have a favourite tutor/lecturer/prof, and how did they inspire you?
I was fortunate to be taught by so many wonderful people - Kate Nation, Kia Nobre and Mark Buckley to name but a few. They inspired me by being so passionate about their research and really encouraging curiosity and critical thinking.
How did friends made during your time at EP influence your life?
I am still in touch with lots of the friends I made during both my undergraduate degree and my DPhil. The one who's probably had the most influence on my life is Camilla Gilmore. We shared an office together as PhD students, and now we work together on lots of research projects as well as get together regularly with our kids.
Do you have a lesson or advice that you’d give to current students/researchers at EP?
Sign up to be a participant in as many studies as you can – it’s a great way to learn about different methods as well as the latest cutting-edge research.
